Xerox WorkCentre PE120

The Xerox WorkCentre PE120 is a fast machine which includes functions like scanning, faxing, printing and copying. All of these functions are conducted in the most efficient way possible and is an ideal machine for office and business use where the saving of time counts for a lot. Its only drawback is that it copies and prints in black and white only, however it scans and fax in color as well as black and white. It even has a network connectivity which it is highly convenient for office setups.

The maximum paper size it supports is 8.5 x 14 inch, which is just around the average. Its main characteristic is its Postscript3 emulation which includes PE120 and PCL6. Its document feeder works automatically and can hold 50 sheets at a time. It also has the advanced technology of scanning once and printing many copies which again results in saving of time and energy.

Xerox Phaser 6125

If you’re after a reasonably priced low use color laser printer, then the Xerox Phaser 6125 might be just what you need. Its relatively small footprint makes it ideal for space conscious users, or home workers.

The dimensions are small, but the printer is quite tall. The single-pass laser working over vertically mounted toner cartridges to save space. The paper tray is at the bottom, and can hold up to 250 sheets. It feeds the paper up and through the printer and deposits the on the top. While there is enough input space for a decent print job, there is no way that the output tray on the top could cope with the whole 250 sheets.

The standard is set high by this machine. Considering the low purchase price, built in networking and decent print quality, this little machine is going to be hard to beat. The control panel is basic to say the least, a simple two-line LCD screen and a couple of buttons. The menu us comprehensive and can provide access to just about all the features. If you don’t like it, the Xerox web interface can also control every aspect of the printer, while also giving information on fault codes and toner status.

Talking of toner, there is a starter cartridge included which is good for around 500 pages, replacements are good value, at around $29 for a 2000 page black, or a 1000 page color cartridge.

Print quality is good for the price. Monochrome prints appear black when they need to, and the grayscale is evenly spread and lacked any noticeable banding. Color images appeared a bit on the red side, but a quick adjustment using the printer web interface remedied that in seconds. Text was great, and images were good at the native 600 dpi. The print quality of the Phaser 6125 is good enough for most situations.

At a speed of up to 12 pages per minute for color and 16 pages for monochrome, the Phaser 6125 isn’t going to be breaking any speed records, but it is perfectly adequate for the low use market it is aimed at. Saying that, this printer has a monthly duty cycle of up to 40,000 pages per month, which is much more than the target market would ever use. I guess it’s nice to have that kind of flexibility, just in case a big print job comes along.

The Phaser 6125 offers solid performance and value for money. It doesn’t excel at anything, but if proficient enough to be a worthy contender in the color laser market.

HP LaserJet 4250

The HP LaserJet 4250 is a simple printer but that isnt all it is. It would be easy to sell it short because it looks nothing special, but its worth more than that, much more.
The build quality is just what we have come to expect from Hewlett Packard. Solid and simple with no bells and whistles. The construction feels reassuring and offers confidence in the longevity of the machine. Toner cartridges are replaced from the front and are easily extracted using the latches on each end. The monochrome cartridges are said to last for 12000 pages, with a high yield version that can cope with 20000. With a duty cycle of up to 200,000 pages a month, this printer is set to handle anything.

Prints are of sufficient for most office applications with the standard 600dpi. The prints appear after around 11 seconds and are produced at around 43 pages per minute. Text quality is great, with the edges coming out straight with no bleeding or blotches. Larger text areas of black were evenly spread, with no overprinting visible.

Installation is a breeze despite there being lots of packing material. The cartridges are already in place, its just a matter of removing the tape and setting up. Driver installation is straightforward and will have you up and running in no time. The CD contains all the tools you need to print a variety of documents, including offering the ability to watermark your prints.

The paper tray holds 500 sheets of paper, and there is room for a further 100 in the multi-purpose tray above. There is the option to expand paper handling by a further 500 if you purchase the additional paper tray. That and expandable memory are the two most popular upgrades for the 4250.

The small control panel on top is simple and to the point. There is a backlit LCD screen that shows the toner state, paper count, printing status and the usual information, with a couple of buttons. Most of the control of this device comes from the desktop tools as they are much more convenient to use.

The LaserJet 4250 is a good printer for those organizations who print quite a bit. The smooth and efficient operation makes it ideal for the home office or smaller workgroup and the quality prints makes it suitable for almost anywhere.

Canon ImageRunner 105

I bought the Canon ImageRunner 105 because it was a can-do machine. There wasnt anything it couldnt handle, at least according to the Canon Representative. Im glad to say that even a couple of years later I was proved right. This is a great, high duty cycle workhorse machine that hasnt let us down once so far.

I run a busy office that specializes in documentation so the fact that the ImageRunner 105 was one of the most powerful office machines ever is one of the things in its favor. It is a high volume printer, scanning, copying machine that can output full sized sheets at a jaw dropping 105 sheets per minute. Hence the 105 in the name, according to the rep anyway.

Each copy or print it produces is almost flawless. The quality is excellent, even when printing images. We all know photography isnt a lasers forte but this machine deals with them like nothing else I have seen. Not only does it print them at the same rate a text sheet is printed, but it appears incredibly detailed. A laser critic might look for artifacts, banding, fading and any other laser maladies, but you wont find them with the ImageRunner 105.

To help the machine work at peak capacity it includes a hard drive and built in image server. This allows us to load up print and copy jobs, up to 5 at a time and either schedule them or let the machine do its thing. You can also print, copy and scan over a network, and scan to email too. My workgroup is like a production powerhouse since we bought this.

Toner cartridges are just as geared towards productivity. A single cartridge can last up to 33,000 pages, but thats nothing compared to the drum which is rated to last a whopping 5,000,000 pages. I have never seen a life that long, in any machine I have worked with.

There were plenty of finishing options too, from hole punches to stapling and stacking. I got the saddle finisher so we could produce good quality booklets which is our main product.

I am very pleased with my ImageRunner 105, and wouldnt hesitate recommending it to someone who needed a hard-core document center. Its printing on an industrial scale, which is perfect for people like me.

OkiData C6100

The OkiData C6100 is a high definition color printer with great workgroup performance, where speed is important. It continues the Oki name and does it proud, performing well in every test we threw at it.

The C6100 is a good quality printer that works right out of the box. It is quite a bit cheaper than its main rival, the Dell 3110cn and prints better too. The C6100 prints text documents at a rate of 26 pages per minute, color and 32 monochrome at a standard 1200 x 600 dpi. This is faster than almost all the other printers in this price, and a definite plus point.

The standard paper tray can hold 300 sheets, while the multi-purpose drawer can add a further 100. There are optional extra drawers as others in this class seem to offer. There is also the option of adding duplexing, extra memory and a hard drive for secure printing. The four versions are the C6100n, the C6100dn with duplexer, C6100dtn with extra paper capacity and the C6100hdn with all the above and a 40Gb hard drive for larger jobs or secure printing. It is the same configuration as others in the Oki range, like the C6150 and C6200.

The small LCD screen is clear and informative with the control buttons on the right of it. The basic menu system is simple to navigate and should pose any problems to users. Once configured on a network, there is no real reason to use the screen as the Oki tools can take care of everything for you.

Being a network enabled device, the C6100 can be added to a workgroup or network quite easily. One nice touch was the ability to restrict color printing to certain users. This can save a significant amount of cash for offices that print a lot.

The Oki C6100 is a solid, good value printer. It is designed and built to produce business documents reliably all throughout the day. The prints are good quality and quick enough for most needs. It won’t satisfy a print heavy organization or a large office, but for what it’s meant for it performs very well.

Konica Minolta MagiColor 2400w

Our office has used the Konica Minolta MagiColor 2400w for the past four years. We got it new because it was cheap and we were surprised at how well it worked.

The first thing to say about it is that is looks cool with the blue top. It’s a nice addition to the office and adds a bit of color to the place. Everything else we have are just beige boxes, so the blue makes a nice change.

One of the things we were most worried about with this was whether it would cope with four of us and our printing requirements. The box isn’t that big, in fact to look at the printer looks like one you would have at home. It’s about the same size as a personal printer, and about the same weight.

I needn’t have worried though because it has coped with everything we could throw at it for the past four years and hasn’t stuttered once. Between us we print between 10 and 12000 sheets a month. The MagiColor 2400w can apparently cope with 35000, so that might be why.

Setting it up was easy. All we had to do was unpack it, undo all the restraining tape and plug it in. The cartridges were already installed so we didn’t even have to do that. It has a USB connection which we set up on one of the spare computers and everything worked perfectly once the drivers were installed. The drivers didn’t take too long either, the CD which was in the box does everything for you, it’s just a matter of telling it where to put the files. Once done, we could access the PC through our network and print like that.

It prints pretty quick too, black and white printing is the fastest, at around 20 pages per minute. Color was a bit slower at 5 pages per minute, but the prints were good quality though. We don’t print many photos, but when we do that come out pretty good. We used to use an inkjet for them, but with the MagiColor 2400w, we can just print them as normal now.

Text documents come out really clear especially when printing at normal size. Graphs and office images come out very clear, the colors in the graphs look exactly the same as they do on the screen. Photographs was the most surprising thing, they are really good for a laser printer. They come out better on this, than on the old inkjet.

I like the MagiColor 2400w, it works well in our office, cartridges are easy to change, and it just works. We don’t have to mess with anything, it just does what you want it to, when you want it to.

Canon Copier ImageClass MF3240

The Canon Copier ImageClass MF3240 is a well priced, well positioned piece of office hardware, ideal for the SOHO who wants multifunction capabilities without compromising on quality.

The Canon name is a reassuring one. A name synonymous with quality, enough so you can be confident in the quality of anything you buy from them. The MF3240 is a monochrome printer, scanner, copier and fax all in one. It can be connected to a computer via USB or it can act as a standalone copier. It needs a computer to get the most out of it and indeed that will be the use the majority of owners will put it to.

The MF3240 is designed to be quick, and at 21 pages per minute print speed, it doesn’t disappoint. It devoured our test document and it demonstrated its mettle quite adequately. Text was the highlight, with clear, sharp lines and an almost black fill that would serve well in any business document. Images and graphics were surprisingly good too. Well defined, shaded and almost as precise as the text. The test document we use has a mixture of text at different points, graphs, images and photographs to simulate a difficult business document the device might be asked to cope with.

The scanning and faxing functions are equally good, offering all the usual options such as resizing, multiple scans and faxes, phone book options, various quality levels, and quick operation.

There is no automatic document feeder which is a minor issue, but nothing that would spoil the enjoyment of this product. As the MF3240 is directed towards SOHO or home users it won’t impact anybody significantly.

The graphics quality and sharp text reproduction coupled with more than reasonable purchase price more than makes up for any shortcomings it may have. Running costs are impressively low too with the Canon single cartridge system. This is a system where the toner, drum and developer are all included in the single cartridge and is changed when the toner expires. This lowers maintenance costs and means less waste. A toner will cost $35 for 2500 pages worth of color.

The MF3240 is a worthwhile contender in the home multifunction market. It’s cheap enough to appeal and good enough to appeal to any small or home business who need to count every penny.

Samsung SCX 6545N MFP Review

While many people don’t consider printing necessity for their homes or work, some consumers may need to invest on this equipment, particularly for business purposes or for students who need to use the equipment for writing their academic papers. For users who want these printers but are on a budget, the Samsung SCX-6545N MFP offers the ideal solution, considering its multifunction features and price. As a product made by Samsung, this printer offers additional features for people looking for a good product to use. Pros Probably the most celebrated feature offered by Samsung SCX-6545N MFP is its multifunctional capability. Consumers certainly look for products that can do various tasks as it saves them time, space, and money. With this printer, people can get their documents printed, pictures scanned, and original documents duplicated whenever necessary. For other users, they take advantage of the optional fax feature if needed. Ever get tired of loud printer sounds that can fill your house with noise? You will absolutely find Samsung SCX-6545N MFP amazing in terms of this feature. Noise measured at standby mode is only 37dBA while printing and copying noise doesnt go over 60dBA. The dBA is a measuring unit for acceptable noise in the workplace. Another awesome feature offered by this printer is its wide LCD display. This gives you an idea of your printing task’s current status. It has touch-screen functionality for customizing settings. Samsung SCX-6545N MFP is a winner when it comes to pricing as it’s more affordable in comparison to other printer models available in the market today. Users of this printer can fully enjoy all its quality features that make them proud of this investment. Unlike inkjet cartridges, toners and drums for laser printers are more expensive. You have to shell out around $85 for a toner cartridge http://www.quikshiptoner.com/catalog/scx-6545n-toner and $152 for a drum cartridge http://www.quikshiptoner.com/catalog/scx-6545n-oem-drum. With the number of prints you can make from a single toner, however, your cost per print could go as a little as a few cents. Cons While the Samsung SCX-6545N MFP flaunts exceptional features, it also has its downsides like its design. Some users are particular in terms of design. This printer looks like a box and may not appear too presentable. Nevertheless, it is nothing fancy enough for other buyers to swoon over and buy in a heartbeat. However, if you’re simply looking for a printer, with design as your last priority, then you’ll find this perfect for your needs. As mentioned earlier, this printer has a wide LCD display with touch-screen functionality. While it can be simple to use, it has some features or functions that some people may find challenging to set up. Finally, Samsung SCX-6545N MFP runs with different Operating Systems (OS), but its list of supported OS doesn’t have the Windows 7 version, which can be a problem if a buyer has already a built-in Windows 7 OS.

Brother HL 5170DN

The Brother HL-5170DN is another strong contender in the mono printer market aimed at small or home businesses.

The real strength of the HL-5170DN is the ability for it to be networked. Workgroup discovery is simply a matter of connecting it and turning it on. It arrived in our workgroup a few seconds later. Once we had downloaded the drivers it was ready to use. Warm was a respectable 10 seconds too. With the first print appearing a further 10 seconds after issuing the print command.

At 21 pages per minute, the HL-5170DN is plenty quick enough for most offices. The prints themselves are reproduced in high quality up to 2400 x 600 dpi. Text is clear, with very crisp edging. There was no bleed at all when we tested ours, which is unusual for a modestly budgeted printer like this. Image reproduction is about what you would expect from a laser. Good but not great. Plenty good enough for office use and even handouts where of sufficient quality as to not embarrass.

The SPARC processor runs at 133Mhz and is plenty powerful enough to process even the longest print queues. The 32Mb provided memory is respectable, even more so when it’s upgraded to the maximum 160Mb.

With good memory, a decent processor and a good quality finish, you would expect to pay much more for this device. The 250 sheet standard paper tray is expandable to 500, a further 50 sheets can be added to the multipurpose tray, and the output tray is enough to cope with 150 sheets. Handling large print jobs is something the HL-5170DN can do with ease.

High yield cartridges can last up to 6500 pages, and are competitively priced making this a good printer for the cost conscious user. Drums will keep going up until 20000 before needing replacement, which again, is a great deal.

Installation is simple, just connect the Ethernet, USB or parallel port and away you go. Drivers are installed in minutes, without issue on our Windows Vista test box, and we were up and running within 10 minutes.

The 5170DN is ideal for those business users who want a no-fuss printer that does exactly what is says on the tin. It can easily cope with almost anything you throw at it. The built in automatic duplex allow double sided printing, and produces prints fast enough for even the most enthusiastic employee. The consumables are great value and easily obtainable through online retailers like Quikshiptoner.com making this a cost effective as well as quality solution.

What Should I Know About HP LaserJet Pro M375NW

Overview
If you need a printer for office environment, you should definitely try the HP LaserJet Pro M375NW because it offers you a multifunctional device able to print, fax, copy and scan documents in a matter of seconds. You can also connect it wirelessly to the internet so that both your employees and guests can use the printer from distance.  It’s great for marketers who need high quality presentations in vivid colors. If we take a look at its overall performances, we would conclude that the printer is perfect for business users.

Pros
The HP LaserJet Pro M375NW doesn’t print at an amazing speed, but 19 pages per minute should be enough for regular users especially because the speed for colored pages doesn’t differ from the one for black & white printing.

It comes with a standard tray of 250 pages and a multipurpose one of 50 pages plus expandability options to an extra 250 sheets tray. The device is a bit too big to be moved around by only one person. The weight of 62 pounds and its dimensions of 19.7 x 16.5 x 19.0 inches make you to place it only on the floor.

Because it’s a HP model you will be easily able to use this company’s online apps. In addition, the CD driver comes with some games. Sudoku lovers will enjoy them. You can also find out what’s going on at the moment because it comes with some news feeds. Graphic designers will like this printer because of its resolution of 600 x 600 dpi for both printing and scanning.

You get a resolution of 300 x 300 dpi for copies and fax pages.  You can zoom in or out in a range of 25-400% when copying and you’ll fax a page in 3 seconds while storing 250 pages in the printer’s memory. The memory for copy jobs is of 99 sheets and you also get to save some energy because the device will shut down when you don’t use it.

Cons
You can’t print double sided pages, so the necessary time to complete the job will go up and you will waste some paper. You can print directly from a flash drive, but you don’t have the same option when it comes to cameras. Because of its average printing speed, HP LaserJet Pro M375NW performs great for small to medium sized companies. Home users will like its capacities too.

Brother MFC 4350

The purchase of the Brother MFC-4350, the three in one multifunction printer allows me to manage my work quickly and efficiently. After starting a new business I dreaded having to fill my space with separate copier, laser printer and a fax machines. When I learned about the three-in-one Brother MFC-4350 I breathed a sigh of relief and bought one right away.

It’s a user friendly, simple to set up laser printer, photo copier and fax machine all in one. Buying this machine allowed me to save a ton of money that I would have spent in buying three separate machines. It also saves lots of space in what is a limited office. I had visions of being a lonely figure surrounded by office equipment, but luckily that isn’t the case.

The Brother MFC-4350 provides excellent results for standard black and white printing at a standard 600 dpi. It has a 14.4kbps fax modem and prints 6 pages per minute and 64 grayscale shades for enhanced results.

The photocopies are of average quality but the text and lines are much sharper in the text than images. It has a 200 sheet capacity paper tray and a 20 page document feeder which is automatic and also comes with 124 station auto dial and broadcasting on the fax. That’s handy for me because I always seem to be sending to the same numbers. Three button presses is much better than 15!

The extensive features and specifications of the Brother MFC-4350 makes handling all the work prints, faxes and copies a breeze. The machine produces excellent, high quality results with sharp and clear images and text that is easily readable.

Other features of the Brother MFC-4350 include reduction and enlargement of up to 50-2000%, dual access call waiting, straight paper path and multi copying up to 99 copies with sorting, fax forwarding and remote fax retrieval. This machine has the capacity to accommodate 200 sheet paper tray and stores more than 130 pages for out of paper reception.

Maintenance is minimal, you can install the cartridge and drum unit easily by removing the vacuum sealed foiled cover from the cartridge and place the cartridge in the provided space. They clip into place behind the flap and away you go again. It’s as easy as that.

The Brother MFC-4350 is a high performance three-in-one machine that is suitable for all types of businesses. The large number of features, good print quality and acceptable speed makes it an ideal choice for the budget and performance conscious amongst us.

Xerox Phaser 7400

Continuing the trend of producing good quality laser printers, Xerox released the Phaser 7400. It is a large format color laser printer that has been designed for busy offices or businesses that need fast, high quality copying.

The large format option allows it to print at up to 12 x 18 paper, which is a standard format for artists and graphic designers. Not many other lasers can support paper of that size, certainly not at this price point anyway.

There is a small control panel on the front with one of the clearest and most informative LCD screens on the market. The menu is very intuitive and it’s obvious that a lot of thought went in to designing it. Each menu function is a maximum of three button presses away, and there is also a back button, which saves a lot of time when you choose the wrong function.

Performance-wise the 7400 is pretty good. Print speed is around 35 pages per minute for a typical business document, and color around 32 pages per minute. This isn’t far off the Xerox promotional material, of 36 pages per minute for color, and 40 for black and white.

Print quality is good for both black and white, and color. Text and images are sharp, even down to fine details. There were examples of banding on grayscale images, and a little darkness for color, but overall the quality was good.

The 7400 is network ready, including a built-in Ethernet port. Connecting it to a network was as easy as plugging it in and switching it on. It appeared in our workgroup a couple of minutes later. The included driver package is good, easy to use and worked first time. There were also useful programs in there to add features to it.

The standard paper drawer holds 800 sheets. As this is a large format printer they natively support the larger 12 x 18 in the drawer. This makes a nice change as normally, to print at that size we have to use the manual feeder. Paper capacity can be enlarged to 3000 sheets with additional drawers.

It also includes a hard drive for storing and scheduling large print jobs, a finisher for stapling, hole punching etc, PostScript support, and optional duplex printing to allow for a fully functioning almost commercial printing environment.

Toner is relatively inexpensive, with high yield versions being able to produce around 15000 sheets before needing replacement. Color ones cost more, but also produce more, with an average lifespan of 18000 pages.

This is a good printer for business or those who want to provide commercial printing services on a budget. The Xerox Phaser 7400 puts the company in the fight for a share of the lucrative laser printer market.

Kyocera Mita FS 1016mfp

If you’re in the market for a laser printer for your small business, the Kyocera Mita FS-1016mfp might be the ideal device. Built to exacting standards by Kyocera this is a printer, copier and scanner all in one chassis.

The FS-1016mfp only measures 180 x 392 x 489mm yet does an awful lot in that small space. The mixture of gray and blue on the covers adds a nice element of color to the box. The paper outputs in the middle of the machine, which is a novel way of doing things, it doesn’t leave you free to continue to use the document handler on top this way.

The printer outputs at 16 pages per minute at 600 dpi, with the copier doing exactly the same. The quality is good, being able to produce good looking prints with a clarity that is surprising for such a small machine. The copier runs just as fast, producing accurate and credible copies at 16 pages per minute. Images are reproduced with nothing to complain about in the finished article. In all cases the edges were sharp, with no banding or artifacts which should satisfy even the most demanding users.

There is an automatic document feeder that sits on top, which can handle standard sized paper. The scanner produces good quality scans at 300 dpi and up to 2400 dpi using software interpolation.

Installation is simple, with USB, parallel and serial connections. Driver installation is quick and offers enough to satisfy even the most demanding users. There is the standard 250 page paper drawer which is sited at the bottom. There is also a little paper window which shows how much paper is left in the drawer. This is such a simple idea, yet immensely useful.

The control panel is clean and clear, the 2 line grey LCD screen bright and easy to read. There are buttons each features, print, copy and scan which are clear and easy to use.

The FS-1016mfp is a good choice for a small business. It has enough going for it to keep the office productive and is reliable enough to not break down too often. The Kyocera quality build is evident throughout and their comprehensive guarantee is enough to settle even the most nervous minds.

HP LaserJet P3005

Visit any medium-to-large office in this country and youll be able to see an HP printer somewhere in there. Hewlett Packard printers, specifically their lasers, are universally popular. And from the performance of the monochrome LaserJet P3005 its easy to see why.

The P3005 is the non networked version, without a duplexer. For those features you’ll need the P3005dn. USB is still fine though, and can be shared with multiple machines through the host computer.

The HP LaserJet P3005 is boxy, standing 16.7 x 16.1 x 12.2 inches, and weighs nearly 36 pounds. Its acceptably small for a mono laser printer, but may be on the large side for a small home office. It has a 500 sheet paper drawer that slots into the front below a 100 sheet multipurpose tray. The prints feed out to the output tray on the top of the printer.

There is a simple control panel, with a small backlit LCD screen and a decent menu system. Navigation is by the direction buttons which allows you to scroll through and select the options. One little quirk we found is the “Show me how” section. This is a great idea if you’re having problems, as it will print out an instruction page for you to follow to solve it. Except this isn’t much use if you’re having problems printing, which most issues are going to be with on a printer.

The P3005 managed to process our 24 page test document at a rate of 32 pages per minute, which is more than respectable. What it does print, it prints well. Text is well defined and clear, with exact edging and no blurring. Graphs and images were slight blurred, but nothing normal use would detect. The grayscale works well and translates colors effectively enough. There was no visible banding or artifacts or in fact anything that would detract from the finished article.

The LaserJet P3005 is a decent all round printer. Its cheap to run and decently fast. As befits its Hewlett Packard heritage its a solid, dependable printer. It’s ideally suited for small to medium workgroups with a decent print workload.

HP Color LaserJet CM2320fxi

My boss asked me to buy myself a fax machine, printer and scanner on the company expenses. I had a tough time thinking how would I buy all the three at the price he had fixed and I did not have any such experience to know which brand would be the best choice. I therefore searched on the internet and came across this amazing machine with multi-functions.

My HP Color LaserJet CM2320fxi is not merely a printer but also includes within it a scanner and fax machine. This extremely useful machine is highly affordable if you consider its superb multi-functional quality. I am using it for the past few months now and I am happy to have picked it. Even my boss is telling me to buy one for his personal office use.

This extra efficient machine has a great quality print outs. It offers a high speed therefore I think it is helpful for the office users who are in a hurry to have their prints done. It prints about 20 papers per minute with top notch quality of black and white, and color prints.

Scanning and faxing is also simple and easy with this LaserJet. One does not really have to be a professional to use this machine at all. I had never used a scanner or a fax machine before, but I can use this as easily as anything. It clearly shows the buttons needed to make the machine function and it also is easy to use through logical placement of the buttons. Its maximum duty cycle is 40,000 pages per month which really impresses me. It is thus useful for all heavy office work.

Its standard paper input is 500 sheets while standard paper output is 150 sheets. It also carries a memory card slot therefore no worries about running short of memory. It also has connectivity capability with Ethernet and USB. This all in one machine has an automatic feeder is network ready and has a top of the line fax capability. It has a high resolution of 600 x 600 DPI.
I changed the cartridges of this printer for the first time, a week back. There has been no problem as such. They are easily installed and work as the originally fitted cartridges. I believe that I have made a great choice by buying this affordable multi-functional machine with fax, scan and printer that allows me to have a hassle free time with its great speed and excellent print quality.

HP DeskJet 882c

I own a private travel agency and my staff and I needed a new printer a year back. I could only think of relying on Hewlett Packard as it has been the one I have always used. Therefore without giving it a second thought, I purchased this model, which I now believe has been the best so far among the ones I have owned before.

The printer has neither heavy nor low work load. It just depends when people are traveling more and want a print of their itinerary. The HP DeskJet 882c is a remarkable printer with some of the best qualities and features for the price. Its maximum resolution for both black and white and for color prints is 600 x 600 dpi and it offers various media types to work with such as envelopes, cards, glossy papers, plain papers, recycled papers and even labels.

Its cartridges are easily available within an affordable price range which makes it highly favorable for even home use. Which is good as when my son needed as printer for his college assignments, I bought him this model. Its noise is hardly noticeable when on standby mode, however during the use it sometimes becomes little noisy after warming up.
It is easy to use as it has the important buttons on the main control panel and therefore there is pretty easy to use. I learned to use it in no time, even my staff did not require much time to get used to it.

It is simple to set up as its cartridges are already installed in it, and the only thing is to connect it to the PC. This takes only a few minutes and a few clicks. The process is simple and does not need guidance of any IT savvy people. Often this is where printers can fall down. A convoluted install or configuration process can be a real barrier to people of different knowledge levels. I can work basic things, but I’m no engineer.

Its print quality is great in both black and white and color. It’s reasonably sized, reasonably priced, easy to use and produces without complaint. If it could make coffee I would employ it.

HP Color LaserJet 3500

When my granddaughter received admission in college, she was expecting a gift from me that could help her in her studies. After thinking it over for a few days (and with a few hints from her) I decided to buy her a printer. I knew that this was something she would really get great use from as it would be a great help for her college assignments as well as she could stop depending on her father’s printer.

Therefore I bought her the HP Color LaserJet 3500 which I was sure about due to its brand which is a reliable product. I am happy to state her that my view about it was not mistaken as the printer is functioning well even after one whole year. She is extremely happy with it and she keeps telling me how helpful it has always been for her. This amazing printer has an input capacity of 350 sheets while it can also be expanded to 850 sheets if there is a requirement for more. That is why when I recommended my husband to buy one, he was glad to know about this expandable feature, which may not be common in other products and models. Its output tray has 150 sheet capacity and it is compatible with both PC and Mac.

This affordable printer is easy to use and has a great speed. My granddaughter tells me that its speed is unbelievingly fast. It can print up to 12 pages in just a single minute. She keeps on comparing her printer with that of her dad’s and she believes hers is 10 times faster than that one. It also has a networking option therefore she can share the data even from her dad’s system, if he needs it.

The product comes with the print cartridges which include the standard colors like magenta, cyan, black and yellow. The best thing about its cartridges is that these are easily available unlike most of the other printers. Thus it is not a matter of hassle to find them. These cartridges are highly affordable and my granddaughter does not have to ask her parents or me to buy them for her if she needs more. It can be so easily monitored that if it is to be used by my daughter, even she can handle it easily though she is not very good with machinery and technology.
Overall this was a great purchase, and one which didn’t take too much from my pocket, but still provided all the necessary functions.

Kyocera Mita FS 4000dn

The first of two things you really pay for in a laser printer is speed, the second is print quality. If you want a fast printer, with the ability to share it across a network, there is often a considerable price premium. The FS-4000DN from Kyocera Mita is rated at 45 pages per minute and will serve any workgroup. Well.

The design is conventional enough, a cube shaped device with a sloping control panel at the front. It includes a backlit 2 line display and an panel of eight buttons.

Five hundred sheets of paper can fit into the FS-4000DNs main paper tray and there is also a fold-down multi-purpose tray which can take a further 100 sheets of paper, envelopes and other odd shaped media.

If this isn’t enough there is also the option to expand paper handling, a cabinet and memory upgrades.

Printer manufacturers always seem to rate their machines by printing documents in draft mode. This means their headline figures should be taken with a small pinch of salt. Draft mode is perfectly acceptable, and often used in office situations for proofing and checking before beginning a large print run. The fastest print speed we achieved in normal print mode was 14 pages per minute, less than a third of the claimed top speed. Using the built-in duplexer we produced a two-sided document at 23 sides per minute, closer to the claimed speed of 33.5 pages per minute.

The print quality is fine for text print, which is proper black and precise, the same can be said for photos and business graphics. In both cases the results were detailed enough for almost any use. They won’t win prizes, but they are plenty good enough for a laser printer. If you want to print photographs and business graphics, you would be shopping for an inkjet not a laser.

The Kyocera drum design means it’s a lifetime part and will never need changing. The only consumable other than paper will be toner, which lasts 20,000 pages per high yield cartridge. That will set you back around $50, which makes the cost per page ridiculously low.

While the Kyocera Mita FS-4000dn might not be the obvious choice for a busy office, the brand is known for its reliability. They are well designed, well built office machines. That’s why the brand is so popular.

HP Color LaserJet 3800dn

We bought the HP Color LaserJet 3800dn as something of an extravagance when my wife and I started our own business. We thought we would use the features and wanted a quality brand like Hewlett Packard. Since its purchase in 2006 we have used it steadily and it hasnt let us down yet.

We print a lot of checks, which it does brilliantly when using the multipurpose tray. Our old printer had started jamming when printing individual ones, which is why we bought a new one when we started the business. The multipurpose tray handles most sizes of odd shaped media, like the checks, envelopes and postcards. The 250 sheet paper tray is for letter sized paper and seems to work well.

Everything seems to be built solidly, even the flaps on the front have solid feeling hinges. The toner cartridges are all in ones so they dont need a drum, which reduces the running costs quite a bit. The cost is about on par with other manufacturers, with a 6000 page black toner coming in at $87, and color $99 for 6000 sheet yield. That offers quite a long life for users like us who dont print every day, especially as toner doesnt dry out like ink does. On average a toner cartridge will last us six months, maybe a bit longer for the color ones. That makes running costs minimal indeed for this printer.

The 3800dn goes to sleep when we dont use it to save power and go silent. When we request a print it only takes a few seconds to warm up and begin printing. It isnt too loud, but is loud enough that you wouldnt want to be printing in a small room with it all day.

The quality of its output is excellent for both color and black and white. Text on our documents and checks is finely printed with no blurriness or other mess on the page. Its ideally suited for us and I for one am glad we bought it.

We have only had to use HP Technical Support once, and while they arent in the US, they do speak good English and understood us well enough. We had suffered a power surge and it fried something inside the printer. The Tech guy figured it out pretty quickly and sent us a replacement part. Once fitted we were up and running again in no time.

The HP Color LaserJet 3800dn is a great printer with duplexing and networking built-in. It works well, works quickly and helps us with our daily chores without complaint. I would recommend it to anyone.

Muratec MFX 3050

With the Muratec MFX-3050 you can get all the features of four office machines into one chassis thanks for multifunction technology. These kinds of devices are becoming increasingly popular as they offer savings on space, money, power and time.

The MFX-3050 is a monochrome printer, copier, scanner and fax all in one. It is ideal for the sole trader, small office or workgroup being both quick and quiet. Noise travels a long way in small spaces, but Muratec thought of that with this device.

The printing function is good, and quick. It can produce prints up to a resolution of 600 dpi at a rate of 30 pages per minute. The print quality is very good, with text on our test document sharp, with crisp, clear edges and good toner fill, especially in larger points.

Images were equally promising, with no banding, distortion or fading. They were accurate and clear, with the shading even, what more do you need from a mono office printer?

The same can be said for the copier, which uses the same elements as the printer. The ability to copy to or from the desktop is also a neat feature to have. Both the printer and copier are served by a 500 page paper drawer which is unfortunately not expandable.

Scanning can be done at a native resolution of 4800 x 600 dpi, which produces good results. You can scan to or from a USB drive or from the network. The software package includes tools to scan straight to pdf or email too.

The fax is fully featured, with all the features you would expect from one. Fast dial, phonebook, broadcast and the ability to email faxes to specific workstations. There is a 50 page document feeder on the top and enough built-in memory to store up to 600 pages of faxes should you run out of paper.

The enclosed toner is good for around 1000 pages, replacements will go to 8000. As the MFX-3050 is aimed at the lower duty cycle user, running costs should be minimal. The cartridges are readily available from online retailers like Quikshiptoner.com who offer much better prices than the manufacturer or other retail outlets.

As a multifunction device, the MFX-3050 is a good prospect. It produces quality documents, is cheap to own, with a reasonable cost per page. It doesn’t take up too much room and is pretty quiet when it’s working. This is one device that a home worker should be able to work with.

Canon PC745

The Canon PC745 is Canon Business Solution’s revolutionary copier as it offers decent features at a reasonable price and can prove to be an excellent addition to your office. It comes equipped with Canon’s patent rapid fusing system that means it does not require any start up or warm up time.

Once the copier is plugged in it can instantly produce high quality copies. In addition, it has a built in single cartridge system that is self sufficient in that it contains the toner, drum and development unit in one easily replaceable cartridge. This ensures that it does not require extra maintenance and running costs are kept to a minimum.

In addition to this the Canon PC745 offers an array of features that could cater to all your copying needs, these include zoom capability, multiple copying, exposure adjustment and reduction and enlargement in copy size. It has a zoom capability of 70% to 141% that allows the size of a copy to go up to a legal size original or down to a business card. It also has four predetermined zoom ratios of 70%, 78%, 86% and 141% to guarantee ease in controlling the image size.

Image exposure can be adjusted manually as well as automatically to make sure that quality and sharpness persists in copying photographs, newspapers and magazines. The option of multiple copying (multiple from 1-100) in particular allows for increased productivity in the office.

Although its copying speed is not highly impressive as it does 10 copies per minute, this can be overlooked because of the amount of customization the Canon PC745 has to offer to your prints. The single sheet bypass allows you to make copies on different materials including colored paper, letterheads, business cards and transparencies. In addition to this you can make copies in a choice of five colors these include black, brown, blue, red and green that can do justice to certain images instead of being typical black and white copies.

The Canon PC745 has the following specifications: it is 19.1 x 17.2 x 11.2 inches and it weighs 44 pounds complete with a stationary platen to ensure that it doesn’t move, hence it is not a portable device it is more conducive to keeping in one place. This is coupled by the fact that it has a high capacity 250 sheet front loading cassette for printing big jobs.

The best part is that it comes with a three year warranty and this copier is backed by customer support from Canon Direct Business Personnel to make sure your copier is in good hands in the situation of a malfunction. Overall, keeping in mind the three year warranty and features the Canon PC745 would make a wise purchase and is good value for money.

Dell 5100cn

The Dell 5100cn was exactly what we needed when we were thinking of buying a printer. I work in an institute as a co-coordinator and the use of a reliable printer is a necessity. I use it on a daily basis to help in my work and it has proved to be a most valuable asset in my daily life.

With regard to its extraordinary features and practical use is recommended for medium and large businesses. It is most useful due to its fast speed and double sided high quality color printing capabilities. You can put up to 500 pages in the default drawer where as the folding tray which serves multiple purposes can hold up to 150 pages. This multipurpose tray can also hold envelopes and tags. Its printing speed in black is 35 pages per minute and 25 pages per minute when you need colored prints. The Dell 5100cn’s compatible toner cartridge provides remarkable prints with image clarity and strong performance of the printer itself.

There is no doubt in saying that Dell 5100cn makes printing easy and handy. It is an intuitive machine and extremely user friendly and hence there is no hassle operating it. The initial installation is also just as simple. You will just need to follow some basic instructions and it can be installed in not more than a few minutes. The printer is affordable especially for medium and large businesses as mentioned earlier and it is worth the price. It has a large paper storage capacity of up to 500 sheets. It can print double sided pages that will save you from the hassle of putting in more sheets every other day. Still if you require more sheets an extra tray can be bought for $260 which increases paper storage capacity by another 500 sheets. The black ink cartridges are also very affordable and cost you not much at all and print up to 8500 pages where as the colored ink cartridge can be refilled for just a little more and it can print around 7500 pages!

The high quality performance and efficiency of the printer has made it popular and commendable. When you are going about your daily work routine there is one thing you certainly do not want; and that is not being able to work efficiently. After all, the technology is there to improve our work and not to hamper it. Hence, it is highly recommended for large firms or even private use as this is an economical unit and will suit everyone’s needs.

HP LaserJet 1200

I bought the HP LaserJet 1200 in 2003 when it first came out because it won awards and plaudits from online reviewers. I have always like HP equipment, its solid and reliable, while being backed up by the computer giant.

I initially bought it because my LaserJet 1100 died, and couldnt be resurrected. I had been happy with it throughout its life so thought the logical thing would be to invest in its successor. How technology has moved on in a little over a year. The 1200 is faster, prints better and seems much more intelligent that the old 1100.

The initial setup was easy. There is a handy leaflet to get you started including diagrams of the steps, there is also more instructions on the CD for those who need a little more help. The only downside to this printer is that the cables are a little awkward at the back. Once you get over this, the printer is great. Its connected by USB or parallel only, but I only use it on a single computer so that doesnt bother me.

Although this is a printer, there is the option to add a scanner and copier to it. I didnt bother because I dont need them, but the flexibility is reassuring. You can also increase the memory, but not the paper handling. The 250 sheet drawer is all you get, but this again is fine for me.

Print-wise the LaserJet 1200 is excellent. Not only is it fast, at around 11 pages per minute (despite HPs claimed 15), but the quality is good too. This is a monochrome printer so has a maximum of 256 shades of gray. To see the prints you would think it was much more than that. Text is deep black, with straight edges and looks very tidy. Photographs are printed well, and this is where the grayscale works to its best. The prints are details, and the shades mix well to make the overall picture. They arent on par with an inkjet, but for a laser they are great.

The HP LaserJet 1200 is a great little printer for those with modest needs. Even though it has a 10,000 page a month duty cycle, one could never imagine using that much. The included tools are great and offer some neat features, which just adds to the versatility of this machine.

Gestetner DSc 428

The Gestetner DSc-428 is a color multifunction laser printer, copier and scanner that is relatively small in size, but big on features. The Gestetner name is all about solid dependability and in this respect the DSc-428 doesn’t let it down.

The multifunction device arena is a tough one. With competitors such as Xerox dominating the market, it can be a difficult place to compete. Gestetner are giving it a go with the DSc-428 which is definitely a contender. It is a full duplex multifunction device that can produce color and monochrome prints quickly and effectively. Mono print and copy speed is 28 pages per minute, color is 24, both of which are respectable times considering the print quality.

Print quality is good, text is clear and crisp, with all the edges appearing straight and accurate. Graphs, images and pictures were above average with only slight banding in the mono prints. Color documents and charts came out well balanced and pleasing to the eye. It’s easy to over analyze printing when you’re in the reviewing business, but in the end it is the mark one eyeball that makes the judgment, and these print pass easily.

Scanning is also pretty good. The scanned images are of good quality, and color reproduction seemed clear and accurate. There is an optional fax machine but our test sample didn’t have it. We have no reason to think it will perform any differently than the copier, printer and scanner so it should be good.

The DSc-428 also includes 1024Mb of RAM, a decent processor and an 80Gb hard drive. This means that the DSc-428 can handle just about anything you throw at it, at any time. If the machine is busy with something it can store your job until the resource is free. It also means you can schedule jobs for less busy times, like early morning or evening. The hard drive also allows for secure printing, copying and faxing. You can password protect elements of it to ensure the documents are kept private.

Paper and toner is loaded from the large door at the front and just clip into place. Drums last 45000 pages, while toner is good for 8000. The cost is reasonable too, so keeping the DSc-428 running won’t cost the earth. The two paper drawers can hold 500 sheets each, which is expandable to 3100 in total. There is also a 100 sheet bypass tray for odd shaped media.

Overall the DSc-428 is a solid office machine. It offers plenty of features to keep even the most demanding offices happy, while remaining economical enough to be appealing to new business.

Xerox Phaser 6125 ColorLaser Printer

OVERVIEW: With one of the smallest footprints for a color laser printer, the affordable and network-ready Xerox Phaser 6125 produces fast color prints right out of the box.

PROS:
Weighing in at 46 pounds and a height of 15”, the boxlike Phaser 6125’s has a true 15.5” x 17.5” footprint. Sitting on a normal office table, the 6125 sits at about elbow height.

In less than 14 seconds, the Phaser 6125 will start printing up to 16 black-and-white pages per minute. The selling point of this color laser comes with its speed. Using a single-pass print design, color prints can be as fast as 12ppm.

The 6125 comes with a 250-sheet cassette tray that supports up to legal-size (8½” x 14”) paper without expanding the printer’s footprint. A multi-purpose feed slot is built right into the paper tray for manual feeding transparencies, labels, post cards, envelopes, 3” x 5” postcards, and paper of various bond weights up to 90 lb.

Having built-in Ethernet network support and hi-speed USB, this printer is right at home either in the middle of an office floor or directly connected to a secretary’s computer. The built-in 64MB of printer memory is fixed, but enough for personal and small office printing needs.

The intuitive control panel on the Phaser 6125 has a multi-line LCD Display, plus buttons that make manual control of the printer relatively painless. By default, it immediately shows you the toner levels for each color. The control panel, toner levels, printer information, configuration, emulation, and network settings can be performed.

The printer produces up to 52dB of sound printing, while idling at 26dB. To give you an idea of what that means: 60 decibels is the level of typical conversations and 30 decibels is the level of a quiet room. You don’t want to have this printer stationed in a conference room chugging away when a meeting is in progress. But, when placed in the copy room or in the middle of a busy office floor, any printing noises will blend in with the background.

CONS:
One of the sacrifices of a color printer is print speeds. However the Phaser 6125 has unusually slow print speeds even in B&W mode at a 600 x 600 dpi resolution. While the color print speed is impressive, a business or office that prints mostly in monochrome should invest in a separate monochrome laser printer instead of relying on the 6125 for doing both jobs.

INK / TONER NEEDS:
The toner cartridges that come with the Phaser 6125 are only good for about 500 pages (or a lot fewer pages if you plan on doing a lot of printing photographic images). The black toner has double the print capacity of the 1,000-page color toners. To save on costs toner combo-packages are available

The Brother MFC 9840CDW

The Brother MFC-9840CDW is a color multifunction color laser printer, copier, fax and scanner and is a great device for the money. It offers a lot of versatility and has enough features to keep even the most demanding users satisfied.

Out of the box, the device can be configured and working in no time. The configuration process is simple and straightforward, with the only complication being setting up the wireless connection. The MFC-9840CDW comes with USB, Ethernet and wireless connections built in. Ethernet and USB worked as soon as they were plugged in and drivers installed, the wireless needed IP printing to be configured before it work, but the instruction manual are complete and comprehensive enough to guide you through it.

The well featured control panel may look a little daunting at first, but is clearly labeled and intuitive to use. Each button has a solid feel and clear labeling so is very easy to get used to. The clear, bright LCD also offers good information and guidance on using the menu system which has been designed with new users in mind.

The build quality is good, with a rugged construction. None of the trays or drawers feel flimsy, and it looks solid enough to last a long time. On top there is an automatic document feeder for copying or scanning. Copying is of a good quality, with the added convenience of having a duplexer for double sided copying.

The standard paper tray holds 250 sheets with the option to expand to 500, the multipurpose tray a further 50 and the output tray is good for 150 sheets. Toner is managed well, and a standard cartridge is good for 5000 sheets.

Copying and printing produced good quality documents. Text quality was clean and crisp, while pages containing images were surprisingly good for a laser. Color reproduction was a little light, but appeared accurate and were more than acceptable. The only weak point in this machine is the scanning. It is basic to say the least, offering only the basic functions. The quality was good though which is the important thing.

The speed of operation is impressive too with a first print appearing in just under 17 seconds. The following prints came out at a rate of 10 pages per minute for both color and monochrome.
This is a truly versatile machine that would serve any office well. Good print quality, with decent speed and the flexibility of things like the duplexer and wireless connectivity make this a winner. Reasonable toner costs, and easy access to them add to the mix. A good purchase for almost any situation.

The Samsung ML 3050 Laser Printer

OVERVIEW:  There comes a time when you need a personal laser printer that can handle more throughput than typical personal printers, but you also want it to be able to handle future demands as a shared or network printer. The solution is Samsung’s ML-3050 monochrome laser printer.

PROS:

The ML-3050’s compact design & footprint takes up only a 1.9 square foot area on a table, while able to still hold legal-size paper within its tray.
Prints come out at an impressive 30 pages per minute. It does take 44 seconds for the ML-3050 to warm up from a cold boot, but once it’s up this laser will start chugging away.

At 1200 x 1200 dpi B&W resolution, the ML-3050 keeps text sharp--even at 6-point font sizes--and does a decent job with graphics. To keep from consuming too much toner, the printer has a 600 dpi resolution with a text-enhance or image-enhance switch.  The Toner Save feature allows for a 40% toner life increase while keeping images clear and readable.

The ML-3050 comes standard with a 250-sheet cassette tray, with an optional second 250-sheet stacking cassette. The flip-door reveals a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray that can handle transparencies, labels, post cards, envelopes, 3” x 5” postcards up to 8½” x 14” legal paper of various bond weights.
The control panel on the ML-3050 has a multi-line LCD Display, plus several buttons that make manual control of the printer relatively intuitive. Through the control panel, printer information, configuration, and emulation settings can be done.

This laser printer comes stock with 16MB of memory, allowing the ML-3050 to easily handle workloads from a single computer. An additional DIMM RAM slot is available to expand printer memory up to 272MB.

Understanding the printing needs of today’s businesses in providing support for the major software applications, Samsung has installed a full set for print emulators that should satisfy the most diverse office. Emulators include PostScript3, HP PCL6, IBM ProPrinter, and EPSON.

CONS:
Since its siblings--the ML-3051N and ND--come stock with 64MB of memory, it’s surprising to find the ML-3050 only comes with 16MB.  While 16MB is more than enough for most single-user printing needs and additional memory can be bought, it would have been nice for the ML-3050 to have come standard with at least 32MB RAM built-in.

The printer produces 54dB of sound printing, idling at 39 dB. To give you an idea of what that means, 60 decibels is the level of typical conversations and 40 decibels is the level of whispering. You probably don’t want to have this network printer stationed in a conference room printing when a meeting is in progress. But when it’s placed in the copy room or in the middle of a busy office floor, the noise is barely noticeable.

With more bells and whistles than other ML printers, warming up takes the ML-3050 about 35 seconds -- 44 seconds if in Sleep mode. From Standby it takes 8.5 seconds between print jobs. Delays like this are unacceptable if the printer is for a single user.  In a network environment where it usually takes a user about 3 to 5 minutes to pick up their printout, the delay is hardly noticeable.

INK/TONER NEEDS:
The ML-3050’s toner and drum are integrated in a single cartridge, making it easy to maintain. Right out the box, the printer comes with the standard size toner, able to print up to 4,000 pages.  An 8,000 double-capacity toner option is also available to double the time between toner replacements.

SOFTWARE:
The ML-3050 has one of the better software packages. Not only does it have the basic printing properties for Mac and Linux, but for Windows users there’s an advanced printing section that allows for booklet printing, creating a large poster mosaics, and watermarks.

The drivers also enable 64-bit and Microsoft Server operating systems to be able to use the ML-3050. This may be considered a no-brainer, but there are printers with software that absolutely will not install on Server 2003 & 2008.

Samsung ML 2851ND Network Laser Printer

OVERVIEW:  The worst thing that can happen to a printer is to be considered obsolete.  Whether it can’t meet the current demands of its users or is unable to handle increased demands in the future--that‘s when a printer is looked upon less as a printer and more as a potential 25-lb boat anchor.  The handsome Samsung ML-2851ND offers fast monochrome 2-sided prints and built-in network support.

PROS:
The “D” in ML-2851ND is for “duplexing”. 2-sided printing is an economic and environmentally friendly way to save on paper.

The ML-2851ND is fast starting and fast printing. In less than 16 seconds after power up, this laser starts chugging letter-size prints at 30 pages per minute, making this one of the fastest of the ML series. Between print jobs, add an additional 8½ seconds.

When you flip open the door on the front of the ML-2851ND, it reveals the 250-sheet paper tray. The single-sheet manual feeder is above the main paper tray, for printing labels, cards, and transparencies (and make sure to use transparencies that are “laser printer safe”). The main tray can handle a variety of sizes: from postcard (3” x 5”) up to legal (8 ½” x 14”). The tray has an adjustable rear lever to allow the printer to hold up to 11” x 14” legal-size paper, while maintaining the same footprint on your desk. The ML-2851ND’s larger paper and toner capacity makes it ideal for people who rely on printing continuously throughout the day. For expandability, an additional 250-sheet tray can be added.
Speaking of paper capacity, the little mechanical lever on the front of ML-2851ND that indicates how much paper is in the tray is an easy, simple way to know at a glance when to refill.

At 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution the ML-2851ND keeps text sharp, even at 6-point font sizes, and does a decent job with graphics. To keep from consuming too much toner, the printer has a 600 dpi resolution with a text-enhance and image-enhance switch.  The Toner Save feature also allows for increased toner life while still producing clear images.

This little laser printer packs a whopping 32MB of memory. With four times the RAM found in most laser printers, the ML-2851ND can easily handle being a network computer for a computer classroom or a business department. The printing emulators include the most popular ones used by businesses today: PostScript, HP PCL, Epson, IBM ProPrinter, and Samsung’s own SPL. A second RAM slot is available to expand printer memory up to 160MB.

The “N” in ML-2851ND is for “networking”.  Having built-in Ethernet network support and a hi-speed USB, the ML-2851ND is right at home either in the middle of an office floor or connected to a secretary’s computer. Often printer companies will offer network features as a $150 - $200 option. With all the other features that have been included in the ML-2851ND as standard, it’s nice to see that Samsung didn’t skimp on the network either.

While practically silent in standby at 26dB, the ML-2851ND does get noisy. Maximum noise is 50dB printing, but if it’s sitting in a typical office where typical conversation levels are 60dB, you won’t notice it.

CONS:
There’s a time to keep things simple, but having a single button to perform several different functions is too much.  If the ML-2851ND had a multi-line display, I could see having the single-button-does-it-all. But the ML-2851ND has just two multi-color LEDs for communication, so it’s like having to read Morse code—or POST code from BIOS. Hold the “Cancel” button once and it cancel’s the current job. Holding the button a half of a second longer will activate the Toner Saver. Hold it for 2 seconds to print a demo page. Hold it for 6 seconds and the ML-2851ND prints a configuration page. Unless there are “crib notes” taped to the printer, don’t expect a lot of employees to take the time to try to find a fix to a printer problem.

INK / TONER NEEDS:
Samsung was nice enough to include a full standard-yield toner, instead of the usual “starter” cartridge. The ML-2851ND’s toner and drum are integrated in a single cartridge, making it easy to maintain. The toner has a yield of about 2,000 pages or 4 reams of paper.  A high-capacity toner option is also available to extend time between toner replacements from 4 reams of paper to a case of paper.

SOFTWARE:
The ML-2851ND has one of the better software packages. Not only does it have the basic printing properties for Mac and Linux (and mainstays like Novell NetWare, and HP-UX operating systems), but for Windows users there’s an advanced printing section that allows for booklet printing, creating a large poster mosaics, and watermarks.

To make network printer configurations and notifications easy, Samsung’s SyncThru Web Service allows printer changes to be made using your IE, Safari, or Firefox browser. The software is not part of the CD and has to be downloaded from Samsung’s web site.
