A printer that will not connect and/or displays the “Printer Offline” error message can be a nuisance, especially if the user has tried everything he/she can think of in order to fix it. Fortunately, users have several techniques at their disposal to repair this problem.

Ensure that Cables are Connected
Although this is the first thing most users do, the user should ensure that all of his/her printer’s cables are connected to thecomputer. Most users tend to simply check to see if his/her cables are connected to the printer, but do not check to see if the cables are actually connected to the computer as well. To be sure, the user should start at each cable’s printer-end, follow it to the computer, and plug in any cables that are not connected at both ends.

Restart the Printer
The next step the user should take is to restart his/her printer in order to reset any settings or jobs it is currently holding or press the reset button if it has one. The user should also take advantage of any built-in test options, wizards, or help features the printer has by scrolling through its menu.

Restart Computer
If the above method does not work, the user should restart his/her computer, especially if any cables had been disconnected. While the printer may have reset itself, the computer’s printer software may not have made the same adjustments. By restarting the computer, the user is forcing his/her computer to rescan the printer and recalibrate its settings.

Re-install Print Spooler
If restarting both the printer and computer does not work, the user can re-install his/her print spooler. A print spooler is the printing software found on a computer that handles communication with the printer as well as jobs the printer is waiting on. There are many different print spoolers available in both free and commercial versions, but the user would be wise to use the print spooler that his/her printer supports by conducting a search on the Internet that has the printer’s brand followed by “print spooler” or “printing software” as the keywords.

OVERVIEW: With one of the smallest footprints for a color laser printer, the affordable and network-ready Xerox Phaser 6125 produces fast color prints right out of the box.

PROS:
Weighing in at 46 pounds and a height of 15”, the boxlike Phaser 6125’s has a true 15.5” x 17.5” footprint. Sitting on a normal office table, the 6125 sits at about elbow height.

In less than 14 seconds, the Phaser 6125 will start printing up to 16 black-and-white pages per minute. The selling point of this color laser comes with its speed. Using a single-pass print design, color prints can be as fast as 12ppm.

The 6125 comes with a 250-sheet cassette tray that supports up to legal-size (8½” x 14”) paper without expanding the printer’s footprint. A multi-purpose feed slot is built right into the paper tray for manual feeding transparencies, labels, post cards, envelopes, 3” x 5” postcards, and paper of various bond weights up to 90 lb.

Having built-in Ethernet network support and hi-speed USB, this printer is right at home either in the middle of an office floor or directly connected to a secretary’s computer. The built-in 64MB of printer memory is fixed, but enough for personal and small office printing needs.

The intuitive control panel on the Phaser 6125 has a multi-line LCD Display, plus buttons that make manual control of the printer relatively painless. By default, it immediately shows you the toner levels for each color. The control panel, toner levels, printer information, configuration, emulation, and network settings can be performed.

The printer produces up to 52dB of sound printing, while idling at 26dB. To give you an idea of what that means: 60 decibels is the level of typical conversations and 30 decibels is the level of a quiet room. You don’t want to have this printer stationed in a conference room chugging away when a meeting is in progress. But, when placed in the copy room or in the middle of a busy office floor, any printing noises will blend in with the background.

CONS:
One of the sacrifices of a color printer is print speeds. However the Phaser 6125 has unusually slow print speeds even in B&W mode at a 600 x 600 dpi resolution. While the color print speed is impressive, a business or office that prints mostly in monochrome should invest in a separate monochrome laser printer instead of relying on the 6125 for doing both jobs.

INK / TONER NEEDS:
The toner cartridges that come with the Phaser 6125 are only good for about 500 pages (or a lot fewer pages if you plan on doing a lot of printing photographic images). The black toner has double the print capacity of the 1,000-page color toners. To save on costs toner combo-packages are available

OVERVIEW:  There comes a time when you need a personal laser printer that can handle more throughput than typical personal printers, but you also want it to be able to handle future demands as a shared or network printer. The solution is Samsung’s ML-3050 monochrome laser printer.

PROS:
The ML-3050’s compact design & footprint takes up only a 1.9 square foot area on a table, while able to still hold legal-size paper within its tray.
Prints come out at an impressive 30 pages per minute. It does take 44 seconds for the ML-3050 to warm up from a cold boot, but once it’s up this laser will start chugging away.

At 1200 x 1200 dpi B&W resolution, the ML-3050 keeps text sharp--even at 6-point font sizes--and does a decent job with graphics. To keep from consuming too much toner, the printer has a 600 dpi resolution with a text-enhance or image-enhance switch.  The Toner Save feature allows for a 40% toner life increase while keeping images clear and readable.

The ML-3050 comes standard with a 250-sheet cassette tray, with an optional second 250-sheet stacking cassette. The flip-door reveals a 50-sheet multi-purpose tray that can handle transparencies, labels, post cards, envelopes, 3” x 5” postcards up to 8½” x 14” legal paper of various bond weights.
The control panel on the ML-3050 has a multi-line LCD Display, plus several buttons that make manual control of the printer relatively intuitive. Through the control panel, printer information, configuration, and emulation settings can be done.

This laser printer comes stock with 16MB of memory, allowing the ML-3050 to easily handle workloads from a single computer. An additional DIMM RAM slot is available to expand printer memory up to 272MB.

Understanding the printing needs of today’s businesses in providing support for the major software applications, Samsung has installed a full set for print emulators that should satisfy the most diverse office. Emulators include PostScript3, HP PCL6, IBM ProPrinter, and EPSON.

CONS:
Since its siblings--the ML-3051N and ND--come stock with 64MB of memory, it’s surprising to find the ML-3050 only comes with 16MB.  While 16MB is more than enough for most single-user printing needs and additional memory can be bought, it would have been nice for the ML-3050 to have come standard with at least 32MB RAM built-in.

The printer produces 54dB of sound printing, idling at 39 dB. To give you an idea of what that means, 60 decibels is the level of typical conversations and 40 decibels is the level of whispering. You probably don’t want to have this network printer stationed in a conference room printing when a meeting is in progress. But when it’s placed in the copy room or in the middle of a busy office floor, the noise is barely noticeable.

With more bells and whistles than other ML printers, warming up takes the ML-3050 about 35 seconds -- 44 seconds if in Sleep mode. From Standby it takes 8.5 seconds between print jobs. Delays like this are unacceptable if the printer is for a single user.  In a network environment where it usually takes a user about 3 to 5 minutes to pick up their printout, the delay is hardly noticeable.

INK/TONER NEEDS:
The ML-3050’s toner and drum are integrated in a single cartridge, making it easy to maintain. Right out the box, the printer comes with the standard size toner, able to print up to 4,000 pages.  An 8,000 double-capacity toner option is also available to double the time between toner replacements.

SOFTWARE:
The ML-3050 has one of the better software packages. Not only does it have the basic printing properties for Mac and Linux, but for Windows users there’s an advanced printing section that allows for booklet printing, creating a large poster mosaics, and watermarks.

The drivers also enable 64-bit and Microsoft Server operating systems to be able to use the ML-3050. This may be considered a no-brainer, but there are printers with software that absolutely will not install on Server 2003 & 2008.

OVERVIEW:  The worst thing that can happen to a printer is to be considered obsolete.  Whether it can’t meet the current demands of its users or is unable to handle increased demands in the future--that‘s when a printer is looked upon less as a printer and more as a potential 25-lb boat anchor.  The handsome Samsung ML-2851ND offers fast monochrome 2-sided prints and built-in network support.

PROS:
The “D” in ML-2851ND is for “duplexing”. 2-sided printing is an economic and environmentally friendly way to save on paper.

The ML-2851ND is fast starting and fast printing. In less than 16 seconds after power up, this laser starts chugging letter-size prints at 30 pages per minute, making this one of the fastest of the ML series. Between print jobs, add an additional 8½ seconds.

When you flip open the door on the front of the ML-2851ND, it reveals the 250-sheet paper tray. The single-sheet manual feeder is above the main paper tray, for printing labels, cards, and transparencies (and make sure to use transparencies that are “laser printer safe”). The main tray can handle a variety of sizes: from postcard (3” x 5”) up to legal (8 ½” x 14”). The tray has an adjustable rear lever to allow the printer to hold up to 11” x 14” legal-size paper, while maintaining the same footprint on your desk. The ML-2851ND’s larger paper and toner capacity makes it ideal for people who rely on printing continuously throughout the day. For expandability, an additional 250-sheet tray can be added.
Speaking of paper capacity, the little mechanical lever on the front of ML-2851ND that indicates how much paper is in the tray is an easy, simple way to know at a glance when to refill.

The printing emulators include the most popular ones used by businesses today: PostScript, HP PCL, Epson, IBM ProPrinter, and Samsung’s own SPL. A second RAM slot is available to expand printer memory up to 160MB.

The “N” in ML-2851ND is for “networking”.  Having built-in Ethernet network support and a hi-speed USB, the ML-2851ND is right at home either in the middle of an office floor or connected to a secretary’s computer. Often printer companies will offer network features as a $150 - $200 option. With all the other features that have been included in the ML-2851ND as standard, it’s nice to see that Samsung didn’t skimp on the network either.

While practically silent in standby at 26dB, the ML-2851ND does get noisy. Maximum noise is 50dB printing, but if it’s sitting in a typical office where typical conversation levels are 60dB, you won’t notice it.

CONS:
There’s a time to keep things simple, but having a single button to perform several different functions is too much.  If the ML-2851ND had a multi-line display, I could see having the single-button-does-it-all. But the ML-2851ND has just two multi-color LEDs for communication, so it’s like having to read Morse code—or POST code from BIOS. Hold the “Cancel” button once and it cancel’s the current job. Holding the button a half of a second longer will activate the Toner Saver. Hold it for 2 seconds to print a demo page. Hold it for 6 seconds and the ML-2851ND prints a configuration page. Unless there are “crib notes” taped to the printer, don’t expect a lot of employees to take the time to try to find a fix to a printer problem.

INK / TONER NEEDS:
Samsung was nice enough to include a full standard-yield toner, instead of the usual “starter” cartridge. The ML-2851ND’s toner and drum are integrated in a single cartridge, making it easy to maintain. The toner has a yield of about 2,000 pages or 4 reams of paper.  A high-capacity toner option is also available to extend time between toner replacements from 4 reams of paper to a case of paper.

SOFTWARE:
The ML-2851ND has one of the better software packages. Not only does it have the basic printing properties for Mac and Linux (and mainstays like Novell NetWare, and HP-UX operating systems), but for Windows users there’s an advanced printing section that allows for booklet printing, creating a large poster mosaics, and watermarks.

To make network printer configurations and notifications easy, Samsung’s SyncThru Web Service allows printer changes to be made using your IE, Safari, or Firefox browser. The software is not part of the CD and has to be downloaded from Samsung’s web site.

OVERVIEW:  Many owners of double-duty printers also need to have the ability to handle print requests across a network. While network options can be purchased separately, it’s usually faster to buy a printer built-in than wait for installation. The Samsung ML-3561N provides built-in network support right out the box.

PROS:
The ML-3561N prints fast. It does take almost 50 seconds for the printer to warm up from a cold boot, but once it’s up this laser starts chugging letter-size prints at 35 pages per minute, making it one of the fastest of the ML series. There’s an additional 9 second delay between print jobs and high-resolution printing.

This printer has some serious paper capacity. The ML-3561N comes standard with a 500-sheet cassette tray, capable of holding an entire ream of letter or legal-size paper. The flip-door reveals a 100-sheet multi-purpose tray that can handle transparencies, labels, post cards, envelopes, 3” x 5” postcards up to 8½” x 14” legal paper of various bond weights.

At 1200 x 1200 dpi resolution, the ML-3561N keeps text sharp--even at 6-point font sizes--and does a decent job with graphics. You can choose between Parallel, USB, or Ethernet connectivity. So, no matter how old or new your computer is, the ML-3561N can handle it.

This laser printer packs 32MB of memory. The ML-3561N can easily handle workloads from multiple computer requests. An additional DIMM RAM slot is available to expand printer memory up to 288MB.

There are still more options you can add to the ML-3561N. A duplex attachment can be purchased for 2-sided printing. To reduce workload on the printer’s RAM, print jobs can be queued into a 40GB hard disk module. For laptop printing support, Samsung offers a wireless LAN card that supports a, b, and g-band standards. A second paper tray can be stacked under the ML-3561N to provide 500 sheets of additional paper capacity.

CONS:
This is not a small, compact printer. At 40 pounds and a footprint that takes up just over a 2 square-foot area, the ML-3561N will need a permanent and a sturdy place to stay.

OVERVIEW:  Unless it’s your job or you’re a student, most people don’t use their printers on a regular basis. If you have an inkjet printer at home and haven’t used your printer in a couple of months, the ink has dried and likely needs to be replaced. Toner for laser printers starts out as dry ink, allowing for a longer shelf life and lower printing costs. This makes laser printers the ideal solution for the casual printer user.  But until recently the high price of laser printers placed them out of the home consumer’s reach. Now, Samsung has the ML-2240: a monochrome laser (that’s the “ML” in ML-2240) printer designed for the casual printer who doesn’t want a printer that takes up a lot of space.

PROS:
The 150-sheet pull-out multi-purpose paper tray has an adjustable tongue to handle paper sizes from postcard-size 3” x 5” up to legal-size 8 ½” x 14”. On other printers having two paper trays, the most their multi-purpose trays can hold is 50 pages. Since both trays are combined on the ML-2240, the printer has almost three times the holding capacity for printing on envelopes, transparencies, and card stock.
Following a similar design found with many inkjet printers, Samsung has the ML-2240 with a pull-down paper tray. This tray can be folded back up when the printer is not in use to save on desk space.
Samsung printers come with a Toner Save mode. In the case of the ML-2240 it saves up to 30% toner with good quality prints, increasing the toner life to almost 2000 pages.

For an affordable, bare-bones laser printer, the ML-2240 prints extremely fast. After the initial warm-up time, letter-size paper prints at about 23 pages per minute.  In operation, the ML-2240 produces 51 dB of sound, and 33dB in standby. 54dB is the sound of low conversations and 30 decibels you can think of as a quiet office. The noise won’t be annoying unless you’re spooling off a 100-page blog from the Internet non-stop. But at 23 pages per minute, you’re likely run out of paper before the noise gets on your nerves anyway.
Having a maximum resolution of 1200 x 600 dpi, the ML-2240 is great for printing text and simple graphics. Photographs will have a more grainy quality, and if you are a stickler for details the ML-2240 resolution may not have the sharpness you desire. But even in Toner Save mode, printouts are still clear and readable.

Unlike parallel, the printer’s USB interface makes connections easy across different computers, laptops, and platforms. While the USB printer cable is not included (a typical practice among all printer companies), buying a USB printer cable today is still a lot cheaper than buying IEEE 1284 parallel cables for older printers.
Another nice feature Samsung provides is software support for the “Big 3 OSes”: Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. Now you don’t have to be locked to one operating system just because your printer only supports one.

CONS:
To start, the ML-2240 takes from 9 to 19 seconds before printing commences. This only becomes a problem if you’re in a rush to get something before you run off to work. Just think of the ML-2240’s longer warm-up time like the old vacuum-tube T.V. sets. If you ever heard your parents or grandparents talk about how long it took TV’s to “warm-up” when they were kids, this printer will give you have a rough idea what they went through.

If you have an older computer that had only 2 USB ports and a parallel port, you will have to sacrifice one USB device because the ML-2240 only has a USB connection. However, there are “Parallel to USB” adaptor cables being sold by various vendor to enable your computer to use its parallel port for USB printers.
As expected for a printer of this size, Samsung only installed a fixed 8MB RAM for the ML-2240. 8MB is fine for text printing, but large Adobe files and graphics will fill up the ML-2240’s memory and will slow printing. There is no PostScript or even the standard HP Printer Control Language (PCL) emulator. Instead Samsung uses a proprietary printer emulator. Most users won’t notice any changes in the way things print, unless they use a lot of advanced features in any high-end graphic or photo editing software.

The ML-2240 only has a 150-sheet tray capacity, requiring frequent refilling if you’re a power printer. But again, the ML-2240 is designed for the casual printer user, not for a classroom or office workload. For casual printing, the tray capacity is plenty.

There are no options on the ML-2240 for expansion of memory, paper capacity, or network capability. Remember, this printer gives you the bare necessities.

INK / TONER NEEDS:
A big disappointment is the ML-2240 does not come shipped to the U.S. with a full toner cartridge. (Although it’s shipped to China with the full cartridge—go figure.) This so-called “starter” toner  prints about 700 pages. That’s half the capacity of a standard toner cartridge, so it may be a good idea to buy the extra toner the same time you buy the printer.

The ML-2240 uses a toner cartridge with a standard yield of about 1,500 pages, (and about 1,900 pages in toner saver mode).

The Samsung does not offer a high-capacity toner for the ML-2240.

SOFTWARE:
The ML-2240 has one of the better software packages. Not only does it have the basic printing properties for Mac and Linux systems, but for Windows systems there’s also an advanced printing section that allows for booklet printing, creating a large poster mosaics, and watermarks.

The compact design makes the ML-2240 an ideal monochrome printer for light-duty home and personal use. It’s lower yield toner, memory, and shorter duty cycle however makes the ML-2240 impracticable for office use. -- Mel Myers

Recycling is one of the most high profile buzzwords of the modern age.  We all know that resources are finite, and that we will eventually run out of places to dump our trash.

Recycling was once regarded as the pastime for those few green campaigners and not for the majority.  As we all became gradually aware of the impact we are having on the planet, the availability of resources, and the sustainability of our way of life, Recycling is something we have all had to become accustomed to.

In the early days our ability to recycle was limited to a few simple materials, and the re-use was limited to basic plastic bottles or trays.  Now recycling has become much more sophisticated and we can recycle almost anything.  The re-use of materials has also improved immeasurably with new technologies that allow the mixing of recycled and new material and the use of completely recycled materials.

Many industries like those making aluminum drinks cans, paper mills and glass bottle manufactories can use completely recycled materials in the production of new ones.  A recycles drinks can or beer bottle can be back on the shelf in a new form six weeks from being sent to the recycling center.

Printer cartridges, while appearing quite complex, can be recycled.  At the moment 95% of all used printer cartridges are dumped in landfill.  With an average half-life of 1000 years, they aren’t going anywhere for a while.

Printer consumable retailers like Quikshiptoner have taken it upon themselves to promote cartridge recycling.  They realize that the rate at which we dump our trash isn’t sustainable, and that it is the duty of every citizen to recycle as much of their waste as possible.

By making it as easy and as convenient as possible to people to recycle, sites like Quikshiptoner hope that more cartridges will be recycle, lessening the burden on the environment.  Not only does recycling reduce this burden, but it also reduces the need for other resources that make the new cartridges.

The less oil required to make new printer cartridges, the longer the world supply will last.  Combine that with the increasing demand for more fuel efficient cars, will make this finite resource last just that little bit longer.

To go that one step further, Quikshiptoner even pays for the shipping of the cartridge to be recycled.  It really couldn’t get easier than that, and is typical of a company trying to change the way we live, and encourage the increase of recycling.  Paying for the shipping removes another barrier between the customer and the recycling center.

Let us hope that more retailers take this kind of approach and encourages their customers to consider the environmental impact of their lives a little more.

At 24in and 44in respectively, the Epson Stylus Pro 7700 and 9700 are packed with the latest Epson technologies that add precision, reliability and productivity to a wide range of professional printing applications.

Epson technology is renowned for delivering fast, efficient printing. The Epson Stylus Pro 7700 and 9700 are designed to produce faster output without compromising print quality, by using advanced compression and decompression technologies that speed up data during printing. The printers feature the latest Epson MicroPiezo TFP print head, which is optimised to work with a five colour ink set, a subset of Epson UltraChrome HDR Ink incorporating cyan, vivid magenta, yellow, photo black and matte black. 1. Refill your cartridge using your Mr. Ink Jet refill kit.
2. Following the diagram at right, place a piece of adhesive tape covering the Click here to enlarge only the four blue colored contacts (a contact is the individual copper square). Make sure that only those four are covered and no others. *Please note that the contacts shown are colored for illustrative purposes only. You will not have blue or red contacts on your cartridge.

3. Place cartridge in the printer. The printer may tell you that there is a problem with your cartridge. Ignore this message. The printer may print an alignment page. If so, allow it to do so.

4. Take the cartridge out of the printer. Remove the tape from the four blue contacts. Place the tape over the four red colored contacts. Make sure that only those four are covered and no others. *Please note that the contacts shown are colored for illustrative purposes only. You will not have blue or red contacts on your cartridge.

5. Follow step 3 again.

6. Take the cartridge out of the printer for the final time. Take the remaining tape off and place back in the printer. The printer should print out an alignment page and the estimated ink level in the toolbox should read full.

Reset Method 2:

1. Refill your cartridge using your Mr. Ink Jet refill kit.

5. Follow step 3 again.

6. Take the cartridge out of the printer for the final time. Take the remaining tape off and place back in the printer. The printer should print out an alignment page and the estimated ink level in the toolbox should read full.

Reset Method 3:

If neither of the reset methods above worked, you can cycle cartridges through to reset the level. You will need two extra cartridges and the one you refilled. First, put the refilled cartridge in the printer. Allow it to recognize the cartridge and print an alignment page. Take that cartridge out and place in the first extra cartridge. Allow it to recognize and print an alignment page. Take the first extra cartridge out and place the second extra cartridge in. Allow it to recognize and print an alignment page. Take the second extra cartridge out. Place the refilled cartridge back in the printer. It will print an alignment page and then the estimated ink level will be reset to full.

Waste Ink Counter Reset Manual for Service mode
Step 1:
1. Turn off the printer. And disconnect the printer cable.
2. Press and hold the POWER button, turn on the printer.
3. The indicator (L.E.D.) should be green.
4. Press and release the RESUME button , the indicator (L.E.D.) should be orange.
5. Press and release the RESUME button again, the indicator (L.E.D.) should be green.
6. Release both buttons.
